The Radio Dept. was formed by Elin Almered and Johan Duncanson in 1995 who were in the school together in their early teenage.
The name was taken from a gas station/radio repairer shop in Lund, Sweden which had a large sign with the name "Radioavdelningen, ("The Radio Department" in Swedish) hanging outside their shop.
After Almered and Duncanson stopped playing music together, the band was put on hiatus. The group was reborn three years later, in 1998, when Duncanson starting making music with Martin Larsson. In 2001, Larsson's then girlfriend Lisa Carlberg joined the group on bass, followed by Per Blomgren on drums and Daniel Tjäder on keyboards
The Radio Dept. has recorded 4-tracks in friends' living rooms, at home, in smelly warehouses, in demo studios with blinking fluorescent lightning and at schools.
In that time, The Radio Dept. have released two albums, countless EPs, gone through numerous lineup changes and experienced a roller coaster of hype due to their inclusion on the soundtrack of Sofia Coppola’s "Marie Antoinette". Their new found fame was not met with outrageous antics or even touring, but with a prolific amount of recordings and one of the most buzzed about albums of 2010, the upcoming "Clinging to a Scheme".
The perfect mix between Saint Etienne and early The Jesus and Mary Chain, and the album you’d hoped My Bloody Valentine did after ”Loveless”.
