You’ve heard them, you’ve sung them, you may have even fallen in love to them… From Killing Me Softly, The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face to Feel Like Makin’ Love, Set the Night to Music, Where is the Love… the songs of Roberta Flack, always sung sweet and low, have defined the sound of the pop-R&B love ballad for generations.
What’s more, the legendary singer-songwriter and six-time Grammy® winner is still in fine form, her voice as strong and seductive as it was 37 years when, as a music scholarship graduate, she shot to fame with 1972’s biggest hit The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face, then the Grammy-winning Where is the Love with Donny Hathaway and subsequently her definitive cover of Lori Lieberman’s tribute to Don McLean, Killing Me Softly with his Song, and became one of the 70s and 80s’ biggest superstars.
Today, she is still expanding her musical legacy through her Roberta Flack School of Music at the Hyde Leadership Charter School in the Bronx which provides an innovative and inspiring music education programme to underprivileged students free of charge. She also regularly gives performances around the world, the most recent being 2009’s sold-out concerts in Australia and New Zealand, and a show-stopping duet with R&B vocalist Maxwell at 2010’s Grammy® Awards.
