Paramore in concert (like, wow): Not a reviewP - TODAY Poparazzi

By Yuda

I didn’t want to write this earlier because (a) I wanted to see if I would still feel the same way in the morning, or whether what I felt about the Paramore concert was just an “at the moment” feeling, (b) I really didn’t know how to describe the wonder that I saw.

The Wonder Girls arrive in Singapore

By Yuda

We reported earlier that the Wonder Girls would be heading to South East Asia. Several hours ago, via her Twitter, Wonder Girl Yeeun (Yenny) updated with a tweet regarding the group’s travel, along with a photo. Now the girls have finally arrived in Singapore!

In the photo is Yeeun herself, along with rapper Yoobin (Yubin). Yeeun uploaded the photo and followed it up with a tweet saying, “Just about to go! Singapore here we go!” This was the last tweet she sent out before boarding her flight since phones disrupt planes’…something.

The girls are visiting Singapore for a Sony Ericsson event, marking their return to the country after over a year and a half. If you’re around, maybe you’ll be lucky enough to spot the Wonder Girls!

Fans End Metallica Israel Concert Boycott

By Yuda

Israeli fans of Metallica have won their bid for cheaper tickets after staging a boycott of the group's 22 May gig in Tel Aviv, Israel.

The man behind the Ramat Gan stadium show - the band's first concert in Israel since 1999 - upset fans when he announced all tickets for the gig would sell for upwards of $159 (£106).

And more than 500Metallica-mad music fans committed to boycott the concert as part of a Facebook.com campaign.

But Tomer Mussman and Rotem Horovitz, who sparked the protest, have now agreed to drop the boycott after coming to an agreement with promoter Marcel Avram.

They write, "After a four-day campaign, tens of news items about us worldwide, over 6,000 supporters and numerous media interviews, we can say that we did it! We won!

"This afternoon, Tomer Mussman met with Mr. Gad Oron, the promoter's representative, and reached an agreement about a significant drop in ticket prices.

"We would like to personally thank Metallica and their management for directly helping us with reaching our goal and reducing the prices. We are officially asking each and every one of you to stop the boycott, and come and enjoy Metallica's concert with us on May 22... We want to thank the producers, Metallica members and management who were willing to talk to us."

Thanks for the report to Contactmusic.com.

drummer Bob Bryar has quit the band.

Gerard Way's rockers made the announcement on their official website, Mychemicalromance.comyesterday (March 3), explaining thatBryar left four weeks ago.

They did not reveal the reason for his departure, or announce a replacement.

"As of four weeks ago, My Chemical Romance and Bob Bryar parted ways," wrote guitarist Frank Iero on his blog. "This was a painful decision for all of us to make and was not taken lightly. We wish him the best of luck in his future endeavours, and expect you all to do the same."

Bryar replaced original My Chemical Romance drummer Matt Pelissier in 2004 following the band's tour of Japan that year.

Sanity Obscure - Dethrone the King

By Toh

Sanity Obscure
Dethrone the King
2008
EP
Thrash metal

Dethrone the King is Sanity Obscure's first EP. To be honest, what really drew me to this band is the presence of members from other bands that I have listened to before, such as Cider (ex-Draconis Infernum, Helvette), who is more known as a black metal vocalist and Faust (Suicide Solution). Surprisingly (or perhaps not), this resulted in what we now know as Sanity Obscure.

While this record may be labeled as thrash metal, instead of your typical thrash metal shouts (think Slayer) or whines (think Megadeth), this record brings thrash metal in another direction by fusing black metal shrieks/growls with thrash music. Unlike other thrash metal bands that focus mainly on speed, they balance out their take on thrash metal by having a balance of speed and techniques.

Mind you, when I say that it sounds like a fusion of black metal and thrash metal, I’m not simply talking about blackened thrash bands like Sabbat and the likes, but more of technical metal with black metal vocals. Think Atheist with a black metal vocalist.

However, while Cider’s vocals are unmistakable, on this record it resembles more of a growl than the usual shriek he uses for his black metal projects. Similarly, Ziyang’s drumming is more demanding here with lots of erratic signature timings. Similarly, guitars on this record are less shreddy, focusing more on techniques as well. What is lacking at times is the presence of the bass guitar, being overshadowed by the other instruments. However, this does not mean that the bass player isn’t good – there is an impressive bass solo on the first track, Dethrone the King that proves naysayers wrong.

Lyrical contents range from the typical politics/oppression (Dethrone the King “Devour oppression | Masticate power | In order to shatter | This Monarchy”) to issues like negative impacts of technological advancement (Nuclear Exploitation “Nuclear missiles detonated | Global chaos is what they pray for”)

Production quality of the EP is pretty polished, with most of the instruments being able to stand out in the mix.

Album artwork and layout were done by Mike Priest (Absence of the Sacred, Hell’s Labyrinth).

While this record may sound too erratic for fans of headbanging to headbang to, it does not mean that it is not an enjoyable record. On first listen, this record immediately reminded me of works of Atheist. Recommended to fans of technical metal.

U2 biggest earning act of 2009 in US

By Yuda

U2
were the biggest earning act in the US last year, according to a new survey.

Bono and co made $109million (£71million) from record sales, touring and royalties, according toBillboard's Top 40 Money Makers list.

The rest of the top five was made up by Bruce Springsteen ($57.6million),Madonna ($47.2million), AC/DC($43.6million) and Britney Spears($38.8million).

Coldplay were the biggest earning UK band, raking in $27.3million, while the late Michael Jacksongrossed $17.3million.

It is the fourth edition of the chart-compiler's annual countdown of the highest earners in music.

The organisation's formula for working out the list is "top secret" but is based around money earned from all methods of selling music, along with publishing and touring.

Views From the Pit: Mass Ritual 2

By Toh
Mass Ritual 2 is the first proper gig for me in almost 4 months. After a one and a half hour wait outside Blackhole, the ritual finally began. It kicked off with an initiation with incense and chanting, with gig organizer Jaarvis drinking a cup of blood-looking fluid. Thereafter, Abyssal [7] kicked off with their first track. It was hard for them to get the crowd, who were restless from all the waiting, to move. But with their infectious style of melodic black metal people in the crowds were soon bobbing their heads to the music. Their frontman tried to fuse some humour effect by mentioning that “no, I (he) am not Cedric, but thanks for the beer” to some laughter from the crowd.

However, it didn’t take much for Stillborn [8] to get the party started. The band’s charismatic stage persona, the frontman’s random ramblings, coupled with their aggressive style of melodic death metal, by their first track the crowd was headbanging wildly and by their second track, moshing was inevitable.

With all the hype and energy built up by Stillborn, it would be hard for Massive [6] to carry through the momentum. But Massive wasn’t going to let the crowds down. While unable to retain the whole crowd’s attention, their main fanbase was there to cheer them on, encouraging them throughout their set.

Xanadoo [8] was up after Massive. They played songs from their latest 2 demos, Blood is Dirt and This Demo is Shit. They played song after song, with hardly any time to breathe in between them. With such loud and blazing fast thrash metal, it wasn’t hard to get crowds to mosh and headbang.

Featuring ex-members of Saitan, Warsaw [7] put up a pretty impressive performance, being able to make the crowds headbang to their music, with lots of horns in the air. Xepher (Draconis Infernum) was invited on stage to perform a track for them as well. The music stand on the stage was a bit awkward though, to be really honest, it was kind of funny to see the vocalist staring into the music stand while growling away the lyrics. However, they put up a good show, featuring Serberuz Hammerfrost (Draconis Infernum) on the bass and backup vocals.

I unfortunately missed Sammath Sathanas’ performance due to a relentless growling devil in the stomach, begging for food. (Sorry Jaarvis!)

Wormrot [9] probably gathered the most violent crowds in the moshpit, with even one member of the crowd being dragged out perhaps due to exhaustion in the pit. Flying limbs and people jumping on each other weren’t an uncommon sight, but all in the name of good fun. Notable moments included the guitarist and vocalist taking turns to surf the crowd in the middle of songs, while maintaining their flawless playing.

When it was time for the last band, Draconis Infernum [9], most of the crowd has already dispersed, probably due to the time it was. Having kept the identity of their new vocalist a secret for a long time, everyone was curious who was going to complete the new line up. Surprisingly to most of us, Serberuz Hammerfrost (previously drums) took over bass and vocals duties and Syroth (Warsaw) filling in for drums. 2 new songs from their upcoming album were played, along with 3 from their previous album and a cover from archgoat.

Overall, was an awesome experience though the venue got pretty stuffy and suffocating towards the end of the gig with the lack of ventilation, excessive activity from the crowd and lots of loud live music. Thanks to JaarVis for this awesome gig line up, and the bands for putting up awesome performances!

Most horns in the air: WARSAW
Most violent moshpit: WORMROT
Most violent headbanging: DRACONIS INFERNUM
Special mention: STILLBORN
