By TerenceIt’s Starry Nite XIV, for the XIVth time! The organiser, SMU Soundfoundry, never fail to make it a rocking blast! Amidst their intensive exam preparation, SMU students know there’s always the time for Starry Nite.
And the one thing for sure that Starry Nite will bring to you, it’s awesome live music. It’s the event we all look forward to.
So what was rocking the stage this time round!
We saw some new bands, “The Flying Yam Cakes” and “Uncle John’s Moon Party” joining the line-up this time and to no surprise, the crowd just loved them.

Guest Band, Run Neon Tiger mesmerises the crowd with their rock
originals!
And the familiar faces we never got enough of.
Chordless
Like always, turning the crowd wild with their energetic music, it's head-banging time with St. Helens!
And finally the all-time favourite, Yelyn and Her Boys, engaging the crowd with popular covers and getting them all up and dancing!
Thank you once again to SMU Soundfoundry for the invitation, Starry Nite has always been a great entertainment and it's a pleasure to be involved.
Cheers,
Terence

First, we had The Blues Machine...
Starting off the night was guest band, The Blues Machine, who plays at Crazy Elephant, one of the bars in the Clarke Quay arena. They sure captivated the crowd with their excellent technical flair, watching them strum their instruments so swiftly in an effortless style was sheer enjoyment.

IGNITE! 2010 Day 2 - 3rd Jul 10, Saturday
By Terence
Be part of the crowd for a rocking good time!
Coming to day 2, it starts from 3.30pm all the way to 10pm and just take a look at the band line up, its going be non-stop solid entertainment.
- Plain Sunset
- Zero Sequence
- Meza Virs
- Fish Tank
- The Analog Girl
- Pervy Boy
- Jammerz Arena
These homegrown bands have established themselves beyond local
ground and some of their achievements have been most
inspiring.
However, what is really important is that they are all coming
together on day 2 of IGNITE! 2010 to give us their very best
tunes. So all we can say is that, you have to be there.
If you need some orientation to boost your enthusiasm, the videos
below are for your enjoyment:
Plain Sunset:
The local veteran band, familiar to many, loved by many is here once again to give us an awesome good time. They have toured around extensively in Asia and even to New Zealand and their music has been expectedly well liked across the borders and their achievements include having 5 of their tracks featured in Star World's Heroes Season 2 promotional.
Zero Sequence:
Known for their highly charged music, this 7 piece, very talented band blends music of different genre together fine-tuned to their very own style. You cant really expect what is coming from them, you just have to be there to hear them; you would be captivated by their impressive musical capabilities.
Meza Virs:
Alright, coming to the much awaited metal band, to metal fans you would simply love them, to non metal fans you would love them just as much. Yeah but beware of moshing lurking at every corner for sure. Its just the time to get all wild.
See you all at Republic Poly @ the Lawn, you wont want to miss it!
Cheers,
Terence
Third Mind Experience
By TerenceThird Mind Experience was held @ Blackhole on the 10th of April 2010.
An insight to Third Mind Experience, from the organisers:
"Third Mind Experience is like being submerged in an isolation tank -- it's enveloping, subverting the senses with surreal visions we'd swear were our own, cleverly jarring and disorienting consciousness beyond any footing in reality.
These are artists who feel the fires of inspiration to create sound art or music that is original, emotional and epic whether it is ambient soundscapes, rock based music, drone or anything else under the sun. Music that crosses boundaries while celebrating expression rather than glamour.
Third Mind refers to a writing style (and eventually cinematic style), popularized by William Burroughs, which involves combining and re-arranging unrelated texts or film scenes to form new narratives and often-surreal images. It's a metaphor for different bands doing their own thing but having a similar ideology or dedication to creating sound art that ties to them to the larger picture.
The series
of gigs will cover a broad a range of sound art as possible. With
the belief thatif it comes from inside you, it is automatically
valid and that music is never wrong, this is the Third Mind
Experience. Come join us this April the 10th at Blackhole. It
starts at 7pm."
Sounds
interesting ya? Right, when we first received the event
introduction, we were very curious about it and decided to check
it out.
Looking for the place was the start man; the front entrance with
the shutters down looked like some vacant shop and
I thought, "what"?? Then we were told to enter from the
back alley through its back door, nicely building up
the suspense.
We had 5 very competent bands for the night.
Air Traffic Control started the night, a solo performance, there
wasn't any instruments, just his Mac laptop and all the
gadgets on the table, good stuff. Couldnt quite comprehend
the music initially with all kinds of sound projected into the
studio-like room. Then I saw some people closing their
eyes, as if soaking in the full essence of
the music. Ya so I tried closing my eyes too
and the feeling was indeed very different. I started
to immerse into this virtual, scenic setting and after
a while I was beginning to appreciate
the uniqueness of the music. It is very illustrative,
your mind freely wanders to whatever you make out of it, so this
is what they call artistic music.
By the time Overhaul
in Damnation, the 2nd band, came on, I was totally
enjoying the "Third Mind" experience, ha, I found it rather
therapeutic actually. Overhaul in Damnation's music had this very
suspense-inducing kind of effect and its perfected with the
lights off, enjoy the thriller.
Next we had
Dulcinea, something which we were more familiar with, a full
band, the only band with a vocalist that night. Yeah, but
you got to check out their very own creations, nicely blending
the special sound effects with their very sound
musicianship.
The band of few words, "This
is Atlantis" was next, charming the crowd with just their
instruments, no vocals at all. A very humble band, thanking
the organisers at every interval. To the very kind organisers, it
was most wise of you to have invited them, their very fast tempo
music was a sheer enjoyment.
The closing band, "Great
Empty" took on the stage with their supporters populating the
cozy room. The smooth and suave band entertained the crowd
beautifully with their very pleasant
tunes.
Third Mind Experience was a great exposure to a very new genre of music, check out the rest of the videos, you might just be a new fan to Third Mind inspired music.

Selected Responses:
Question 6: What do you like about Live4MusiC?
"I like how they update with us with all the music or Gigs that will happened here in Singapore.. Even before the press release it."
"Its a quite impeccable online source for music scenes that happens in Singapore where it list out all details about it, thus it keeps me up-to-date, always. Other thing is to know more musicians, from the amatuers to the highly regards"
"Magazine, with contributors constantly updating members on music news in Singapore, not only on Live4Music.com, but also on the group on Facebook. It also enables users like me to contribute to the magazine, which I really like a lot since the only other place where I can do so is my personal blog, which hardly gets any traffic."
Question 7: What do you dislike about Live4MusiC?
"The forum. It is way under utilized by its users and hence lacked the ability to establish itself as a place for interactivity and the exchange of information."
"1. Videos too cluttered, the more 'commercialised' videos (which can be found easily in youtube or official websites) shouldnt be uploaded to the website (unless needed for articles etc) so that the more exclusive videos can be found more easily (can administer the browsing of the videos page more conveniently). 2. The slow bandwidth can be improved to make surfing the website a more pleasant experience."
"Not much updates on the local scene here. Forums are quite dead since lesser people know about this site"
Question 8: In what ways can Live4MusiC do better?
"Improve video and sound quality. Increase marketing for your website."
"Include a "Local Bands" section that can update the viewers with the band's press releases, upcoming gigs, album launches etc (band interviews could be done too!). This can give some exposure to the local bands as well as allow the viewers to know more about the local music scene. Its not as dead as it seems."
"Probably set up an emailing service that helps to inform if any of your favorite acts will be coming to Singapore. As it make it customized to it's users favorite bands."
Alright, thanks once again and stay tune for the final draw.

Final Draw:
And the winner is "Ahmad Zhafran".
Congratulations!

A Cozy Affair Feat Jasmine Tye
By TerenceYeah that’s Jasmine Tye, the bubbly, sweet faced teen who exhibited exceptional confidence each time she took on the stage. No surprise at all for her amazing achievement, clinching the 2nd runner up for Singapore Idol Season 2 in 2006.
Nudge! 09 Carnival and Concert!
By Terence
Nudge! 09 Carnival and Concert was a charity event in aid of the Straits Times Pocket Money Fund, it was put together by 4 very fine young men. I would say these guys did a splendid job, everything from the food, venue, sponsors and especially the music, which was planned and executed perfectly. These boys proved they werent any bookish bunch, and in fact very resourceful and capable. Most importantly, all this great work was done with a very meaningful intention.
