Linkin Park, 'A Thousand Suns' (Machine Shop/Warner Bros.)

By Yuda
BY MIKAEL WOOD

Rating: 6/10

Linkin Park's fourth studio album (and second collaboration with producer Rick Rubin) contains plenty of aggressively arty material that might surprise fans of the megapopular rap-rock outfit: "Wretches and Kings," for instance, chops up spoken-word sound bites in a Bomb Squad style, while "When They Come for Me" layers post-NIN dance-punk synths over a tribal drum groove. Still, the most unexpected track on the boldly conceived A Thousand Suns might be the disc's acoustic closer, "The Messenger," in which Chester Bennington flexes a tender camp-counselor croon.

Drummer Mike Portnoy Leaves Dream Theater

By Yuda

Drummer Mike Portnoy, who has been working with Avenged Sevenfold since the death of drummer James "The Rev" Sullivan, has now issued the following announcement about parting ways with Dream Theater:

"I am about to write something I never imagined I'd ever write: After 25 years, I have decided to leave Dream Theater....the band I founded, led and truly loved for a quarter of a century. To many people this will come as a complete shock, and will also likely be misunderstood by some, but please believe me that it is not a hasty decision...it is something I have struggled with for the last year or so....

K-pop "khaos" at Orchard mall

By Yuda

THEY were queuing overnight for tickets to a Korean Pop (K-pop) concert. But there were so many of them that the crowd almost got out of hand.

A woman fainted. Plants were trampled on. Some teenagers ran about anxiously. Shrieks and shouts were heard, and even the police and an ambulance were called in.

But queue numbers were soon handed out, and by morning, order was restored.

On Friday, some 3,000 K-pop fans descended on 313@Somerset.

They wanted tickets to Korean Pop Night 2010, a concert next month at which six Korean bands will perform.

The six bands performing in the four-hour long event at the Singapore Expo are: Girls' Generation (SNSD), Big Bang, F.T Island, SHINee, INFINITE and Dae Guk Nam Ah (D-NA).

The best tickets, costing $258 and $218 each, were sold yesterday at music store HMV, on the fourth storey of the mall.

Fans had been loitering around the mall since Wednesday night, eagerly waiting for signs of a queue forming.

By the time The New Paper got there at 11pm on Friday, a big crowd had already gathered outside the mall.
