Baybeats 2010!

Baybeats will always have a special place in our hearts because it is the first major music event Live4MusiC covered =) The experience is beyond words!

And that's why we're here once again this year! Logistically nothing much has changed. 3 great stages catering to different audiences namely: Chillout Stage for yea chillout....Arena for the more soothing full setup type bands....and my favourite, the Powerhouse for all out in your face music!

Day 1

Cockpit on Day 1 was really quite an eye-opener that could swing either way. Spotting a comical super villain theme as you can tell from their band name, some would see it as too gimmicky while others might actually be entertained. Musically-wise, the compositions are pretty good, but for me the execution was up to par during the performance. I can see myself appreciating their music better but their theme just doesn't sit in well with me =)

The bands that caught my eye were "The Standards" a band from Bangkok but look and sound more like they're from Britain. Globalization indeed =). The music is totally entertaining and dance-able, and with a good-looking frontman like theirs, there's no way you're gonna keep your attention away from the band!

Car Crash Hearts, a band from Malaysia, also impressed! With a mix of punk and hard rock, these guys certainly know how to rock the stage and entertain the crowd!

Last but not least of course, the headliner of Day 1, Rudra, "Extreme Metal Band at Baybeats....Extreme Metal Band Headlining Baybeats" were the exact words of Rudra's frontman, Kathir. The quality of the band was unquestionable. However, the sound was far from satisfactory. A problem that all of us encountered at last year's Baybeats...the volume of the guitars were way too low. Or was it just from where we were standing?

Day 2

The day that I was looking forward to the most! Like last year, Day 2 of Baybeats had the "heaviest" line-up, which I'm more inclined towards =) Noteworthy performances during day 2 include: Lunarin, Chicosci, David Choi, The Camerawalls, Meltgsnow, and the ALMIGHTY KING LY CHEE!

If you noticed also, some of our videos at the Arena for Day 2 weren't very well-taken. Why? because the esplanade staff manager decided videos were detrimental to the performing bands and thus is prohibited. Well I think that's bull-crap. Amount of publicity the videos can create probably far outweighs any potential losses in album sales. But with that said, we respect artistes' stand on this issue and any request for videos to be taken down will be acted upon immediately with no questions asked! We're nice people =D

And I have to re-iterate this again. King Ly Chee is AWESOME! Honestly, I've never been a big fan of hardcore, but this band is just over the top! Hardcore all the way! =D But when the frontman promised the security no one's going to get hurt in the dance and mosh, I really start to wonder...how the hell do you not get injured when people mosh and dance with their fists and feet swinging around!?!?

With that said, I was glad the sound for Day 2 was top-notch! Making the already awesome performances over the roof!

Day 3

So it finally came down to the last day of Baybeats 2010! Once again more eye-opening performances from bands like Kyoto Protocol, Modern Children, Handsome Furs, and Hedgehog! I've always taken for granted that the Powerhouse is always THE stage to be at but Day 3 proved me wrong. The Arena was the place for Day 3!

Special mention goes to Modern Children, who aptly named, plays an almost cartoony/fantasy-like tune and literally using musical toys to produce their music. What really came through was the belief in their music. When you really enjoy what you're playing on stage, this passion and emotion can be felt and more often than not touches the audience.

And when we talk about enjoying your music, the Handsome Furs couple is second to none =)

However, having Mixhell as the final closing act of Baybeats, not really a decision I can understand.

An extremely hectic 3 days but immensely enjoyable! Looking forward to Baybeats 2011!

We have videos taken for all the other performers here!
