STARRY NITE XV: Dead Poets' Society

Published by: Yuda on 13th Apr 2012 | View all blogs by Yuda
This semester SMU pays tribute to music legends who have passed on- from the Greats in 'The 27 Club' (read: Amy Winehouse, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain, Janis Joplin etc.)

Having started Starry Nite since Starry Nite X, we've really seen some of the bands and musicians grow over the years.

The gig kickstarted with December Rain before guest band, Cashew Chemists, took the stage. A rock 'n' roll band with a strong 60s vibe, the organizers from SMU couldn't have picked a band that was more apt for this episode of Dead Poets' Society! Their experience definitely showed through their performance, poised and musically tight as they belted out their originals, some for the first time live.

The next band, St Helens, then came on stage and brought raw all-out hard rock to the crowd bring covers from the likes of Red Hot Chili Peppers, Porcupine Tree, Alter Bridge etc. This was when the crowd really got heated up as the mosh area in front of the stage began to fill like just like how a typical Starry Nite should be!

Next came Moon Party with a good mix of pop rock hits from the likes of The Script, Aerosmith etc. The distinct sound of the band was really brought out through the high vocal range of their vocalist especially in his falsetto prowess.

Last band of the night, Fancy Free, was familiar to us as they opened with a signature tune they played from the last Starry Nite, Bohemian Rhapsody. This is never an easy song to pull off live and they did a great job! Also bringing on something they did in the last Starry Nite, an 8 min medley!

Marking the end of yet another semester, we wish all SMU students a good break and keep rocking!

Oh and have I mentioned...SMU students can really sing? Their rendition of "Don't forget the lyrics" in between performances really shows there is much hidden talent out there in the stands.
