This is the first stop for the Live4MusiC team because this is my (Yuda) favourite spot and highly recommended! And what a time to visit Wala as it marks the return of Shirlyn Tan, front-lady of The UnXpected,  after being away for 9 weeks!

First off, let’s take this opportunity to introduce the team!

We arrived at Wala at 730pm to make sure we manage to grab a seat. Yes, on nights when the Unxpected are playing, you HAVE to arrive early to ensure a certain level of comfort. The set starts at 945pm but at 8pm, the seats were already almost filled. Seems like the crowd really missed Shirlyn! On a regular Saturday night, any later than 830pm and you would have to settle without a table and chair.

Let’s start with the popular side dishes at Wala. MUST TRY!

Pizza Wala ($22)
Wala Wings ($10)
Calamari ($10)

And the beer!

Corona Extra and WARSTEINER

All housepour/beer are on 1-for-1 before 9pm and drinks can be on hold throughout the night.

And now the best part of the night! The Music!! I'll just let the videos do the talking. The setlist below as far as the team could remember after 4 pints of beer =) (Not Exhaustive)

  • The Killers - Mr. Brightside
  • Maroon 5 - Won’t go home without you
  • Fallout boy
  • SRV
  • Def Leppard – Pour some sugar on me
  • Joan Jett - I love rock n roll
  • We are young
  • U2
  • Black Sabbath - Paranoid
  • RHCP - Suck my kiss
  • The Ting Tings - That’s not my name
  • Deep Purple - Smoke On The Water
  • Muse - Time is running out
  • Iron Maiden - Children of the damned
  • RATM - Killing in the name of
  • Metallica - Master of Puppets
  • Gwen Stefanie - The Sweet Escape
  • Led Zeppelin - Whole lotta love
  • Queen - Under pressure
  • Michael Jackson
  • Oasis - Wonderwall

Honestly, have you seen any pubs with this type of atmosphere week-in week-out? The indoor and compact setting of the venue gives it a better sound compared to outdoor venues. If you’re into classic rock or rock in general, this is the place to be. More so if you’re a fan of hard rock stuff because there aren’t many venues in Singapore that gives you a regular dosage of that.

Even if you prefer the mainstream stuff, the band’s versatility ensures everyone gets their fair share of music as can be seen from the set-list. Who would have imagined a band playing The Ting Tings one moment plays Rage Against the Machine the next!? Every night varies with regards to the music played depending on the crowd’s requests, so make your requests known the next time you’re there!

And what can be a better way to end off the night than to take a picture with Shirlyn and Joan from the band!

Last but not least, we would also like to thank some of the friendly patrons of Wala who were willing to contribute their pictures!
