Lady Gaga would be bringing her world tour to Singapore next year

By Yuda

What would Lady Gaga have to say about the Fun Pack Song, the ditty meant for the National Day Parade that used the music to her big hit Bad Romance? That was the question on everyone's mind at the press conference yesterday with Lady Gaga, who was in town to celebrate the unveiling of Amped 2.0, the new version of SingTel's award winning Amped music service that will be launched in September this year.

But before reporters could rattle off the question, minders told everybody that Lady Gaga would only take questions about her new album, Born This Way. This did not sit well with the journalists, some of whom had been waiting for almost two hours for the press conference, held at the Arts Science Museum, to start. The 25-year-old pop star did, however, have good news for fans who could not make it to her showcase at Marina Bay Sands yesterday - she would be bringing her world tour to Singapore next year.

Interview: Lady Gaga

By Yuda
By Peter Robinson

'I’m not interested in people positioning me next to other artists,' announces the singer, sitting in a recording studio with Time Out. 'I just want to make my music.'

A bold claim from someone who has appeared in public dressed in numerous decapitated Kermits, a gas mask, a gyroscope, a large lampshade, a massive egg and a dress made entirely of meat. And these looks have been hard to miss, because for the last three years, Lady Gaga has dominated pop’s field of vision in a way other artists with comparable sales have not.

She is the Internet age’s first true pop phenomenon, but mo’ Twitterfollowers (she recently hit the 10 million mark), mo’ problems. While no megastar in history has been able to connect with an audience so easily, nor has any been quite this easy to heckle. In February, Lady G's much-trumpeted big comeback single, 'Born This Way,' was loudly criticized for sounding too much like Madonna; its successor, 'Judas,' was rounded upon for being too much like, er, Lady Gaga.

'It’s part of the whole Internet culture,' she declares. 'People want you to fail. People want to tear me down, they were going to knife me anyway. The good news is that when they look back they’ll all remember how brave I was: "She put out a record about being yourself, and we crucified her for it, but she soared on and sat at number one for six weeks and told everyone to FUCK OFF!" '

It wasn’t 'Born This Way' that told everyone to fuck off.

Lady Gaga Album Sells More Than 1 Million Copies

By Yuda

Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" sold 1.11 million copies its first week in North America, according to Nielsen SoundScan, giving the pop singer the largest sales week since 2005.

Sales of the album, launched on May 23, were helped by Amazon.com Inc., which offered a digital-download version of "Born This Way" for just 99 cents on Monday and Thursday last week. The low price drew attention, created technical problems and helped sell an estimated 440,000 downloads, according to an estimate posted on the website of trade magazine Billboard.

That appeared to be about double the number of albums sold by Apple Inc.'s iTunes Store, which normally commands a dominant share of paid digital downloads.

The first day of Amazon's promotion, which was designed to draw attention to its new Cloud Drive online storage service, the retailer was forced to apologize for delays in delivering the album. Three days later it repeated the offer, telling customers: "This time we're ready."

Apple sells the same album for $11.99. Both services offered an expanded edition of the album for higher prices.

Amazon paid the album's full wholesale cost, about $9, to the singer's record company, VivendiSA's Universal Music Group, and absorbed the cost.

The last album to sell more copies in a week was rapper 50 Cent's "The Massacre," which notched 1.14 million copies its first week out, in 2005.

Albums that sold a million copies in a week have never been common. Since SoundScan started in 1991, the service has reported only 17 albums that achieved that sales record.

But as music sales have declined under pressure from digital piracy and other forces, they have become even rarer. Last December, Taylor Swift's "Speak Now" sold just over 1 million copies its first week out.

Apple is expected to start iCloud, its competitor to Cloud Drive, next Monday. The service is expected to include more features than Cloud Drive, thanks to a set of licensing deals it recently reached with Universal and other major music companies.

Lady Gaga’s $0.99 Album Download Overwhelms Amazon

By Yuda
by Brenna Ehrlich

Lady Gaga fans were delighted Monday to learn that they could download her new album, Born This Way, from Amazon for a mere $0.99 — until, of course, technical difficulties set in.

Downloads of the album are delayed, leaving folks unable to get the entire album immediately upon purchase. Amazon issued the following statement:

Amazon is experiencing high volume and downloads are delayed. If customers order today, they will get the full Lady Gaga, Born This Way album for $0.99. Thanks for your patience.

However, the damage has already been done, as users are meting out one-star ratings in droves, most of which deal with Amazon’s slow service as opposed to the quality of the music (although some reviews in the lower bracket did dub the disc “disappointing”). As a result, the album has a relatively low three-star rating.

Reviews of the following nature reign: “This review isn’t a review of the album, but of the Amazon’s digital music service. I tried this as an experiment to see if I wanted to order more music this way, but it only downloaded half the songs. Still a deal at 99cents, but not an experiment I’ll want to repeat with a full-price album.”

Many reviews also trumpet the user’s intent to buy from iTunes in the future, instead of Amazon — a state of affairs Amazon would want to avoid, considering iTunes already holds most of the market share for digital music.

This backlash does not bode well for the future popularity of Amazon’s new Cloud Player service, which the company was touting in the promotional language of the deal, offering users more storage space for buying the album.
